Award for tutor who ran photography course

A legendary tutor who led a photography course for more than 30 years has been honoured by the The Royal Photographic Society.

Paul Delmar, who stepped down as leader of the National Council for the Training of Journalists’ Press Photography and Photojournalism course at Norton College Sheffield last year, has been announced as the winner of the society’s Education Award.

He is the first person to be honoured with the new award.

Paul, 65, taught the flagship course at Norton College and its predecessor Richmond College for 30 years. He stepped down as course in October 2010 and was then replaced by Robert Rathbone.

Said Paul: “It was totally unexpected and I was quite honoured to be ranked amongst the greatest names in the world.

“I’m absolutely over the moon. I had an email that said 100pc of people had voted for me.”

The Royal Photographic International Awards are offered annually to individuals who have made significant contributions to the art and science of photography

The Education Award is given for outstanding achievement or sustained contribution in photographic education. This includes exceptional course development and management in combination with inspirational teaching or any other element that has progressed or improved photographic teaching and education.

In 2009 Paul won the Lifetime Achievement category of the Learning and Skills Improvement Service STAR Awards which aims to honour the ‘unsung heroes’ of further education.

Paul, who now runs a photo consultancy business, will collect his award at a ceremony in London in September.

He added: “The course is a success even though I have left, for me that’s the greatest reward.”
