A journalist has recruited an apprentice after becoming frustrated at how difficult it is for young people to get into the industry.
Winning freelance education journalist Janet Murray chose Rhian Jones from scores of applicants to be her personal apprentice.
Janet, who mainly writes for national newspapers, will be paying Rhian £6.08 an hour for 30 hours a week.
She thinks she is the first freelance journalist to have recruited an apprentice and says it will help with her mounting workload and will also see her playing her part in passing on ‘skills and experience to the next generation.’
Rhian, 22, will quit her university studies in Lancaster to start her year-long apprenticeship in London.
Does Janet Murray think it is wise to take on an apprentice who is dumping her university degree for the minimum wage? Good idea though this is, surely it would be better to offer Rhian an apprenticeship after she has graduated.
If Janet was serious about developing skills in young reporters, I would have thought she would recognise completing a degree with all the skills that go with it, would be a useful precursor to practical training.
