Sunday title could be relaunched as magazine

Radical plans to turn a regional Sunday newspaper into a news magazine are being considered by publishing bosses in Glasgow.

It is understood that the Sunday Herald could be relaunched in magazine format from 9 January and could even be renamed the New Sunday Herald.

According to one report, the multi-section newspaper is set to be turned into one magazine-style publication designed to become ‘Scotland’s news magazine’ and printed on high-quality paper.

Publishers at the Sunday Herald have not commented on speculation about the possible changes, which emerged on allmediascotland.com.

The Sunday Herald was launched as a broadsheet in 1999 under the former Scotsman editor Andrew Jaspan and became a tabloid in 2005 under the current editor, Richard Walker.

The current plans may mean a move to an A4-size current affairs magazine format.

According to the latest ABC figures, the circulation of the Sunday Herald was 41,464 in November, down 3.96pc year on year.

Tom Thomson, group managing editor Newsquest’s Herald and Times Group, declined to comment on the plans when contacted by HTFP.

HoldtheFrontPage must have given up arguing with the newspaper bosses who decline to comment.
