Penguin plans book of local press funnies

A leading book publisher is putting together a collection of amusing local newspaper headlines – with a bit of help from HoldtheFrontPage readers!

Over the past 10 years, readers have sent in hundreds of nominations for our newspaper funnies section.

Now, some of them along with other offbeat stories which have been highlighted on HTFP are set to find their way into an anthology of the 100 funniest local newspaper headlines to be published by Penguin next year.

They include the infamous Whitstable Mum in Custard Shortage tale which was one of our most-viewed stories last year.

The book’s editor, Karen Ings, said: “Local newspaper headlines often raise a smile, inadvertently or otherwise. This will be a celebration of the quirkiest and best of local journalism.”

She added: “Your Friday Funnies feature has been a great help in my research.”

It is the second such venture for Karen, who two years ago put together a collection of books with odd titles, entitled How To Avoid Huge Ships.

Anybody wanting to send in suggestions for the book should email Karen on [email protected]. The publishers are promising a free copy to anyone whose contribution is included.
