New solo venture for ex-press photographer

Pets and portraits are now in focus for a former local press photographer.

Victoria Tetley, left, has opened her own business after spending more than eight years taking photos for the Chester Chronicle and some its Trinity Mirror sister titles.

The 34-year-old took voluntary redundancy last autumn and has been busying herself with freelance press and PR work since.

She is now concentrating on pets and portraits with her new business venture vjtphotography which she launched using her redundancy cheque.

Victoria told HTFP: “I decided to take the voluntary redundancy because I felt confident enough in my abilities to go it alone, having had an excellent grounding at Trinity Mirror.

“I also felt I had built up a good number of press contacts and friends over the years and I also knew there was help out there to get me pointing in the right direction.

“Within a couple of days of leaving, I had registered for a business start-up course in Liverpool and they helped me tremendously in terms of writing a business plan.

“It felt like the right time to leave and I’m young enough to devote my time and energy to the business and mature and sensible enough to go about things the right way.

“I like a challenge and I’m really looking forward to the future. I know that it’s going to be hard work for at least the first year but hopefully it will all pay off eventually.

“I’ll be doing the press and PR work which I love but supplementing this with the pet and portrait side of my business which I am hoping to get established this year.”

As press photographers we oftern look down our noses at them but….do some weddings as well. You will find that your interpersonal skills as a press photographer will be much better than a lot of traditional wedding photographers. You will also find that your work is much better than a lot of them – and at the stupid prices they charge you will be much better value for money.

Snapper 2 ….their prices are higher because they value their skills when was the last time a newspaper truely valued photo skills
