Media volunteers needed for 2012 Olympics

Journalists and photographers keen to sample life at the Olympics are being urged to try volunteering.

The London Organising Committee is keen to hear from anyone with a media background who would like to help organise the news operations at the 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games.

It is estimated that 5,000 representatives of the UK and international media will descend on the capital in two years for the ‘greatest show on Earth’.

Volunteers will be working alongside accredited journalists and photographers in the Main Press Centre, which will act as a news bureau for the press and media, and at locations where the sporting action takes place.

Other volunteers will work on the Olympic News Service and provide news, reviews and quotes to aid coverage.

The organising committee also needs volunteers in the period leading up to the 2012 Games which run from 27 July to 12 August and the Paralympics, from 29 August to 9 September.

Organisers are requesting a time commitment of ten days for either event or 20 to work on both and training will be provided.

Applicants must be 18 or over on 1 January 2012. To find out more email [email protected].

VOLUNTEERS?! You’d think with the billions this is costing the country, they could stump up a bit of cash to pay journalists.

Absolutely right Observer. We read too many ads for volunteers, interns, those seeking work experience.
It’s simply business cashing in on desperation. How about offering some cash?
My garden could do with a tidy-up, my living room needs a lick of paint – are there any volunteers out there?

Volunteering and working for free does not pay the bills. I am fed up of being told ‘ we have no budget’ and surely if we are hosting the Games this should provide much needed paid work for photographers and journalists. Any volunteers like to pay my bills?

Although this would be fantastic experience, it is scandalous. Such a big event, yet they’re offering zero, zilch, nothing. Plus you’d be rushed off your feet.

The UK keep pushing Fair Trade. How bout Fair Trade, ie pay a living wage to journalists. I’m sure Seb Coe isn’t working for nothing

This really takes the biscuit. You want professional people to provide a professional service but don’t want to pay for it. Prestige don’t pay the bills – get real!
