End of an era for MEN as move takes place

This weekend will mark the end of an era for the Manchester Evening News as it completes its long-awaited move to Oldham.

New owners Trinity Mirror announced that the daily and its 21 sister titles would be moving to its centre at Chadderton near the M60 shortly after buying MEN Media in March.

The final stages of the move from the existing city centre premises in Scott Place will take place this weekend with the newsroom in situ at the new premises from Monday.

MEN Media will retain a city centre presence in Piccadilly Gardens and there are plans for advertising and editorial staff to hot-desk at various locations throughout Greater Manchester.

Managing director David Sharrock said: “We’re excited about completing our move to the new Chadderton site, but in many ways it is business as usual.

“We will continue to serve our loyal readers and advertisers by focusing on publishing engaging content in the Manchester Evening News, twenty weekly titles and companion websites.

“We will also continue to change the way we operate to make us more accessible, and as an example, our reporters will become more mobile to get closer to local news across Greater Manchester.

“This move means a bright future for MEN Media, our readers and advertisers alike.”

The MEN has been based in central Manchester since the title was founded in 1868.

Its premises at Scott Place were not included in the sale to Trinity Mirror in February. The lease on the building was retained by the previous owners, Guardian Media Group, with Trinity granted only a six-month licence to use it.

I think David Sharrock needs to get out more. How exciting can an industrial estate on the outskirts of Oldham be? I’m sure most of his staff find the centre of Manchester a tad more stimulating.

The MEN will mark the end of an era as it closes down completely this weekend. “This means a bright future for everybody,” said David Sharrock.

I here that there is space available in vacated newspaper offices in the Orkneys. Surely that would be cheaper for Trinity Mirror than Oldham – and Media City Kirkwall does have a certain ring.

an industrial estate in Oldham and central manchester have much in common – both full of empty buildings. The move is about three miles and takes the MEN back to east and north Manchester which were their core areas of readership until they were abandoned so the paper could appeal to the yuppies who never arrived
