Columnist selects favourite pieces for new book

A regional newspaper columnist has had a book published featuring more than 80 of his columns from the last eight years.

Anton Rippon, who writes a weekly column for the Derby Telegraph, has compiled a collection of his best pieces for a book called A Derby View, pictured left.

Anton has spent almost all his working life in the newspaper and publishing industry, including writing for many national newspapers and being the author of 30 books.

His Telegraph columns have covered all aspects of life in Derby, including his family, friends and politicians.

He said: “When I sold my publishing company, Breedon Books, in 2003, I wanted to keep on working.

“I originally started working on the Derby Telegraph in 1965 and spent 10 years in the Burton office before I left the paper, returning for a spell in 1981 in Derby.

“I’ve always had a fondness for the Derby Telegraph, so I regard it as a privilege to be able to share my thoughts and experiences with Derbeians every week.

“I’ve written for most of the quality nationals over the years but I am never more delighted than seeing my work in the Derby Telegraph.”

Anton was persuaded to compile the book by two old school friends and because he had received many letters from readers over the years saying they enjoyed his pieces.

His columns have covered his views on finding a youth eating pizza while sat on a poppy wreath at a war memorial and his unsuccessful attempt to squeeze through a gap in a fence to see Derby’s famous water buffalo Oink.

Anton’s book also includes several columns about his beloved Derby County and many old photos of the city.

A Derby View is published by Wharncliffe at the price of £12.99.
