Almost a third of all internet users are too worried about online fraud to purchase goods using their credit cards via the web.

Meanwhile, Office of Fair Trading research suggests of those who do shop online, 54pc feel it is as safe as purchasing goods in the high street – a rise from 26pc three years ago.

During 2008 Britons spent nearly £44bn online.
