Former daily editor bows out after 37 years

A former evening newspaper editor who spent 37 years with one company has finally shut down his keyboard for the last time.

David Jones was editor of the Kent Evening Post and its successor title the Medway Evening Post, which eventually became Medway Today and finally the bi-weekly Medway Messenger.

But he remained with the KM Group after the changes as the Messenger’s community editor until this summer.

David officially retired a few weeks ago, but within days he was back at his desk to provide temporary cover at the news desk.

But on Sunday, after editing yesterday’s edition of the Medway Messenger, he called it a day after 37 years covering the growth and development of the Medway Towns.

His final edition included newly-promoted Gillingham beating Swindon 5-0 and the death of a local speedboat driver at a public event.

However, David hasn’t given up the writing game completely.

He will continue to contribute to a weekly column written by three veteran journalists – the ‘Old Codgers’ – who take it turn turns to vent their spleen about current events.
