Company's change of heart over subbing hub base

A planned centralised subbing hub for a group of weekly newspapers in the South Yorkshire area is to be moved following a consultation with staff.

In the summer, Johnston Press unveiled plans to centralise the subbing operation for its South Yorkshire Newspaper division, which also includes the Worksop Guardian, in Nottinghamshire.

Initially, divisional managing director Paul Bentham told staff the subbing hub would be based in Worksop, but it has now been decided that it will be located in Doncaster instead.

Mr Bentham said: “After consultation with all individuals involved in the proposed centralised subbing unit for South Yorkshire Newspapers I can confirm that the unit which will serve Doncaster, Goole, Selby, Mexborough and Worksop titles will now be based in Doncaster.”

As well as the Guardian, other titles affected by the plans include the Doncaster Free Press, South Yorkshire Times and Selby Times.

The proposals are expected to result in the loss of the equivalent of 1.75 full-time editorial roles across the division.

Mr Bentham has also announced that Chris Burton will be in charge of the new operation as group production editor.

Chris was previously assistant editor of the Worksop Guardian.
