Cambridge News crowned top regional newspaper

The Cambridge News has been scooped one of the top prizes at last night’s 2009 Newspaper Awards.

The Iliffe News and Media daily was crowned regional newspaper of the year, ahead of the Birmingham Post and Belfast Telegraph, and colour supplement of the year for its Property News.

It was also commended in the most significant contribution to future success for its online video content.

The Newspaper Awards are run in association with the Production Journal and Fujifilm and celebrate the best in newspaper and news media production.

The Cumberland News was awarded weekly newspaper of the year, Torquay daily the Herald Express picked up best use of new media category for its Rock Stars website and the KM Group was named environmental newspaper company of the year.

Gary Cullum, director of the Newspaper Awards, said: “It is extremely encouraging this year to see the second highest number of entries to the Newspaper Awards in its 13-year history.

“We have seen the quality, creative flair and innovation the industry is capable of and local media is at the forefront of that development and use of new technology online.”

As a former employee of Iliffe someone should take a look at what they are doing to their Staffordshire newspapers. Your Leek Paper in particular, once a 5,000 circ strong paper cut, slashed and reduced and now not even an office in Leek but one in Ashbourne 30 or 40 miles away! Great way to run a local paper.
