Third journalist on way out at Sussex weekly

A third senior journalist’s job has gone at a South East weekly newspaper.

The Shoreham Herald made its edition editor Michelle Nevell and sport editor Richard Amey redundant last month.

Now entertainments editor Nikki Jeffrey has become the third member of staff to leave.

The Shoreham title is part of the Worthing Herald Series in West Sussex.

A spokesperson for the NUJ chapel said: “I think everybody is still a bit shell shocked.

“It’s been unreal the past few weeks. We first got the news back in August and it’s been a long gruelling process.

“The frustrating thing is we feel powerless to do anything.”

In August the National Union of Journalists announced it planned a group-wide campaign of action against Johnston Press, including a possible ballot of its members for strike action.

The spokesman added: “We’re prepared to take part in such a ballot and are on standby to do that but we’ve not taken any action on a local basis.”

Sussex Newspapers managing director Karl Dimmock was unavailable for comment.
