Scathing editorial after Post is gagged by legal process

An investigation has been launched after The Argus, in Brighton, published video footage of a road sweeper emptying the liquid contents of his collection vehicle all over a residential street.
The incident was questioned by the newspaper but the council claims it is normal practice. It was reported to the police by the motorist who filmed it on his mobile phone, believing the waste could have been carrying dangerous syringes and effluent.

The Lancashire Evening Post is asking how menacing a crime must a young offender commit before it is in the public’s interest for the press to name them.
Its outspoken editorial column came after the paper failed in a bid to get a court to allow identification of a teenaged flasher who terrorised a woman for six months, letting himself into her home and stealing her underwear.
Preston Youth Court never banned him from being named, but complex legislation around young offenders meant the newspaper could not name him, as it had already published the police information about offences that led to his ASBO – barring him from appearing naked from the waist down in public.

A memorial service has been held for artist and author, therapist and spiritual healer Eileen Inge Herzberg.
She was well-know as a columnist for the Cornishman newspaper and once worked as a financial journalist for the Daily Mail. She was taken ill while on holiday in Goa and unexpectedly died there just after Christmas.

The Journal newspaper in Newcastle has been praised in a Parliamentary Early Day Motion for exposing what it calls the British Library’s policy of resisting the return of the Lindisfarne Gospels to the north-east.
Kevan Jones MP said the campaign was widely supported and claimed the library had withheld information on the topic.
