News editor scoops company-wide award

The news editor of the Norwich Evening News is Archant’s editorial person of the year.

David Powles beat competition from the across the publishing group to take the prize at Archant’s company-wide award ceremony.

The judges said: “David has risen to the challenge during a period of change. His work on stories across print, web and video are an example for others to follow.”

There were ten prizes up for grabs with all finalists being winners in their own right from divisional awards held before Christmas.

Chief executive John Fry said: “The Archant People Awards 2007 were launched to focus on the achievements and excellence of staff from right across the company. We are keen to recognise and reward staff who do a great job and who maybe have gone that extra mile.”

Archant publishes four daily and around 75 weekly newspapers – predominantly in the east and south-east of England – alongside around 80 magazine and more than 120 websites.

The editorial winners and highly commended were:

Editorial Person of the Year
Winner – David Powles, news editor, Norwich Evening News

Highly commended – Kate Crockett, editor, The Grove magazine in London

Newcomer of the Year
Highly commended – Caroline Harrap, editor, Surrey Life magazine

Innovation or New Launch of the Year
Winner – www.jobs24.co.uk, job search and recruitment website
The judges said: “The launch of Jobs24 was handled extremely well and has delivered Archant with a growing revenue stream from digital activity.”
Highly commended – Property supplements produced by the Bury and Sudbury Mercury

Product or Service of the Year
Winner – Cornwall Life magazine
The judges said: “The development of Cornwall Life has been dramatic. It is one of the strongest in the Life portfolio and has established itself as a ‘must have’ in its distribution area.”
Highly commended – Professional Photographer, specialist photography magazine
