New editor for Northcliffe daily newspaper

The Scunthorpe Telegraph has appointed a new editor.

Mel Cook, currently deputy editor of the Hull Daily Mail, will take over the post from May 19.

He replaces Jane Manning who left the Northcliffe title to become editor-in-chief of Kent Regional News and Media.

Mel will also be in charge of the weekly Scunthorpe Target and the thisisscunthorpe.co.uk website.

Until then current deputy editor Dave Atkin will remain as acting editor.

Mel, (46), said: “This is an exciting opportunity and I’m looking forward to working with a talented editorial team to develop further the Telegraph’s print and digital offering.”

Hull Daily Mail editor John Meehan said: “The Scunthorpe Telegraph has a long-standing and proud record as one of Northcliffe and the industry’s best-performing titles for circulation.

“Under Jane’s leadership, the Scunthorpe editorial team also made great strides forward in multimedia publishing.

“Mel now has the opportunity to develop our services to readers in print and digitally still further and to ensure the Telegraph and its sister platforms are at the heart of all things local in Scunthorpe.”

Mel has been a journalist for 26 years. He was appointed deputy editor of the Hull Daily Mail almost ten years ago, before which he worked at the South Wales Echo, in Cardiff, and Evening Telegraph in Derby.
