Mail goes multimedia on historic first day of Premier League

A new pullout section and a fans charter are just two of the ways a north-east daily is marking its local team’s successful start to the Premier League season.

Hull City, having never played in the top division of English football in its 104-year existence, kicked off the new season with a 2-1 victory over Fulham on Saturday.

Northcliffe title the Hull Daily Mail covered the landmark game in today’s edition with 15 pages, including a new eight-page pullout section called The Match.

It features analysis of the game’s key talking points, a round-up of coverage in the Sunday nationals, the views of top TV pundits such as Gary Lineker and Alan Hansen and a picture spread from the game.

Online the Mail has five video reports including post-match press conferences and a video diary of an 85-year-old fan who never thought he’d see The Tigers play in the top division.

Editor John Meehan said: “Hull City achieving Premier League status is an enormous story for us.

“There will be more media interest in Hull City than ever before but we have put down a marker that our coverage will be better and more comprehensive than you can get anywhere else.

“We’ve set out to give the fans a complete service in the paper and on the web.

“The only disappointment was that technical problems prevented us sending out mobile sportflashes recording the Tigers’ historic first Premier League goal and the winning strike.

“Subscribers can look forward to receiving this service for subsequent games.”

The Hull Daily Mail has also launched a Tigers Fans’ Premier League Charter urging supporters to give their total support to the team to help it stay in the top league.

By backing the charter, Hull City fans pledge to support the Tigers vociferously, to keep the team going when the going gets tough and to maintain support to the final whistle among others.

Hull City manager Phil Brown was the first to back the charter, saying it was important that supporters gave their total backing to the players during what was sure to be a difficult first season in the top flight.
