Footy fans rampage film on newspaper website

Rangers fans who ran amok in Manchester city centre after the Uefa Cup Final are being shamed on the Evening News website. The MEN has nearly nine minutes of CCTV footage on its website showing hundreds of yobs attacking riot police and vandalising parked cars. One section of footage shows a group of hooligans swarming over a police officer and kicking him as he lays helpless on the ground.


Mail on Sunday editor Peter Wright has been appointed to the Press Complaints Commission. He will be one of seven editors to sit on the 17-member Commission, replacing Daily Express editor Peter Hill.
Peter Wright said: “The Mail on Sunday has always been a firm supporter of self-regulation of the press and I very much look forward to taking part in this as a member of the Press Complaints Commission.”


The Guild of Agricultural Journalists’ annual five-day training course attracted more than 30 applicants for its ten places. They went to a mix of new entrants and those seeking a career change.
Sessions on periodical journalism, current training and job opportunities, together with an introduction to news and feature writing and interviewing, were led by freelance editorial training consultant David Mascord, the Mail on Sunday’s gardening correspondent Martyn Cox and Farmers Weekly Group’s head of content Charles Abel.


An exhibition of work by press photographer Don McPhee is now on show in London. During his 36-year career Don worked in such diverse place as Northern Ireland, South Africa and India as well as covering major news stories including the miners’ strike.
Don died of cancer in March, aged 61, and was based in the Guardian’s Manchester office. The free exhibition runs until June 27 at the Newsroom, Archive and Visitor Centre.


The election bandwagon for the deputy general secretary of the National Union of Journalists will roll into Manchester on June 9. Branch members will be able to grill candidates Michelle Stanistreet and John Tonor at a special hustings in the Mechanics Institute, Princess Street.
The meeting gives NUJ members the chance to find out what the candidates plan to bring to the role if elected. The branch meeting starts 6.30pm with the hustings at 7.30pm.
