Ex-pat journalists' success story goes on and on

A group of former UK regional press journalists now working on a Caribbean daily paper are celebrating another sales increase as circulations continue to plummet “back home.”

The Tribune in Nassau, Bahamas, is reporting a 14.13pc increase in street sales, marking a six-year run of rising circulation.

Its staff include managing editor John Marquis, formerly of the Northamprton Chronicle and Echo, Nottingham Evening Post, and Packet Newspapers, Cornwall; Jason Donald, ex Sunday Post, Scotland; Neil Hartnell, formerly of Packet Newspapers; and Marcus Day, ex Express and Star, Wolverhampton.

John, who retires next May, said the paper’s “aggresive” editorial policy was the key to its success.

He said: “The Tribune knows its market. We are a broadsheet with tabloid characteristics and we appeal to the entire spectrum of Bahamian society.

“Unlike many modern newspapers, we also have an aggressive approach to news. Accountants don’t run The Tribune – journalists do. It makes all the difference.”

“Since 1998, when the paper went morning after decades as an evening, The Tribune’s circulation has risen by nearly 80pc. And all are genuine paid-for sales.

“Apart from a couple of promotions each year, we don’t go in for gimmicks. Nor do we have bulk drops. The readers like what we do. That’s the secret,” he added.

well done John! Knowing you like I do, it’s no surprise to hear your success is founded on good journo-content. Sooner they get back to the knitting over here the better – ‘tho so much damage is already done.

Glad you’re having a great time, Marcus. It’s a long way from that squalid house in Wilnecote. Happy Christmas.

The Tribune’s not bad but it looks like a world-beater compared to the other garbage it’s up against. Bring back the Miami Herald supplement and trash the USA Today…
“Lesbian Shoes” headline from a couple of years ago was definitely a highlight tho
