Community award for long-serving editor

A weekly newspaper editor has been awarded a rare honour by his local Rotary Club for his “unwavering commitment” to his patch over the course of two decades.

Joe Scicluna has worked for the Andover Advertiser in Hampshire for the past 20 years and has been editor since December 1996.

Now he has been awarded a Paul Harris Award by the Rotary Club of Andover for his outstanding contribution to the town.

The award, launched in 1948 in memory of Rotary’s founder, recognises outstanding service to the local and wider community in keeping with the aims of Rotary.

Club president Gordon Howard said: “Joe has worked for the Andover Advertiser for 20 years during which time he has been the leading champion for endless local causes aimed at fostering a community spirit in Andover and for promoting a positive feeling within our local community.

“The members of the Rotary Club of Andover believe Joe has indeed provided an outstanding service to our local community over a great number of years.”

Joe added: “You just go about your business, quietly getting on with things, then something like this happens.

“It is such an honour to be presented with this award, but an even greater honour and pleasure to have it bestowed by people for whom I have such respect and admiration for all the sterling work they do.”
