Two more scholars sign up

Two more teenagers have joined the Hull Daily Mail Scholars scheme to help them make the headlines in their chosen careers.

Sarah Blevins and Samantha Lane, both 18, have taken advantage of the scheme organised by the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside and the Mail to give local people the chance to train as journalists.

As well as completing their three-year BA Hons Journalism degree course in Lincoln, the candidates, who must have lived in the Mail’s circulation area for at least 10 years, must spend at least 50 days working in the Mail’s newsroom.

Three Scholars are already making good progress on the scheme and will be guaranteed employment when they graduate. They can also work towards their NVQ Level 4 in newspaper journalism which qualifies them as senior journalists.

Mail editor John Meehan says he’s absolutely confident the scheme will be a huge success and the idea of recruiting local people should mean they will naturally understand the interests and concerns of local readers.
