Student's talent is in Vogue

Bursary student Jayne Sharratt has been named as a finalist in Vogue’s Talent Contest for Young Writers.

Jayne is a student on the post-graduate Professional Writing Programme at Falmouth College of Arts in Cornwall.

Her work gets regular exposure on Bloc Magazine, the college’s online journal for students on the course

The magazine has claimed several previous successes for itself and contributors. It won the Guardian Media Award for Best Student Website in 1999.

Jayne (23, from Blackburn, won the prestigious David and Jane Cornwell Prize this year. Her work posted on the online magazine covers the magical world of Disney and shopping in LA.

Last year’s Bloc editor, Jacquie Wilde, went on to become assistant editor at StudentUk. Eighty per cent of last year’s students have gone on to work on the web in various capacities.

Bloc managing editor Sam North said: “The programme is centered around writing online and I believe that June’s edition is our best so far.

“Part of the course involves every student writing a 1,000-word piece a week for seven months.

“We also run another web magazine, hackwriters, which is getting good notices, particularly in the USA and Canada.”
