A networking event has been held for budding broadcast journalists from ethnically and socially diverse backgrounds, with tips on offer on how to get on in the world of television.

Aspire, a support network for media professionals, teamed up with ITN for the event, with staff from the broadcaster – including ITV News journalists – on hand to give advice.

Among the guest speakers were ITN managing editor Robin Elias.

He said: “Like most mainstream broadcasters, ITV News is determined that its staff properly reflects the UK’s multi-cultural society. But I’m not convinced that this message is fully accepted by some black and Asian journalists.

“We see this event as a way of engaging face-to-face with journalists from ethnic minorities who like the idea of working in television news, but want some advice on how best to do it.”
