Future journalists hear from former editor

Former Newcastle Evening Chronicle editor Alison Hastings has been passing on her experience to the journalists of the future.

Alison, who left the Chronicle in 2002 after six years, gave students from the University of Central Lancashire’s Department of Journalism an insight into the workings of the Press Complaints Commission.

She was also an editorial member of the press watchdog between 1999 and 2002, and gave the audience of 100 postgraduates and undergraduates a step-by-step guide to the editors’ Code of Practice.

During the hour-long lecture she also examined the history of press regulation and talked about recent cases where the PCC had made rulings on issues such as privacy.

Alison’s visit was part of a series of talks by journalism professionals which are held at the university throughout the year.
