Yorkshire Evening Post tackles racism

Schools in Yorkshire are being challenged to take up the issue of racism in football through a campaign backed by Leeds United and the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Each month during the football season, a Leeds United player will award a school in the paper’s circulation area with a plaque to recognise its efforts to tackle racism.

Researchers at Leeds Metropolitan University have been commissioned to look into racial problems in grass-roots football as part of the independent Kick It Out campaign.

Jonathan Long, of the LMU, said: “I think it’s really important that people don’t think doing a piece of research is the end of the affair. It has to be carried into active campaigns, like the Leeds United Against Racism School Project.

“We don’t want people to just react to incidents of racism, but to actively try to create an environment where it is unlikely to happen.”
