Where there's a Will…

When architecture graduate Will Callaghan set out on his career path, he knew site planning to play a large part in his future – but he didn’t realise it would be websites.

Former internet editor at the Nottingham Evening Post, Will (28), now enjoys a similar role at Men’s Health magazine’s Internet site.

Men’s Health online was launched in December 2000 and already has six-figure page impressions every month.

The message boards alone have more than 4,000 page impressions a day. And site traffic is increasingly at a rate of 20 per cent a month.

In the beginning, though, it was not straightforward for Will, who graduated from Nottingham University in 1991.

He found himself in the middle of a recession and took up an offer from a friend to help him out with a new project he was setting up.

“I started writing pieces for a site called Archetype, which covered all elements of the architecture industry.

“I spent 18 months there and another 18 months writing for the RoyalInstitute of British Architecture, which gave me a good grounding in the journalism and Internet industries.”

Eager to learn more about the Internet, he spent the next two yearsfreelancing and wrote a number of pieces for the Guardian.

Happy in the knowledge he had gained sufficient knowledge, Will returned to Nottingham in April 1999, to take up the Internet editor’s post.

The attraction of being responsible for the complete running of a website soon proved too strong for the Wolverhampton-born Will though, and he returned to London to take up his current position.

Will said: “This job gives me a lot responsibility, I’m involved with writing, designing and coding on the site, as well as looking at ways of improving the site, and the strategies for how we want it to go in the future.

“It’s updated daily with all the latest news and advice on subjects such as beating winter colds and getting in shape for the summer.”

He runs the site alone, but has a couple of freelancers to call on for technical help.
