When the election candidate shot his rival…

As my editor frequently says when I bring him flimsy small crime news “People here have to live with it every day, they don’t want to read about it every week”, thus, only the most over the top crimes make it in.

My favourite happened a week before I arrived here. During daylight hours, in City Hall, whilst the council was in session a man walked in and shot a Council member dead. It turned out that the shooter was contesting the dead man’s seat. Can you imagine that back at Slough’s Council offices?

My all time favourite story since I’ve been here involve a publicity hungry Senator, plans for the World Trade Centre and New York’s Terrorist Investigation Squad. This Senator had some how come into possession of detailed schematic drawings for one of the new World Trade Centre buildings.

Apparently they’d been left in the bins of a bagel store down the road. So, before calling the Terrorist Investigation Squad he called us for some rosy photographs of him studying the plans and vote winning “what if these got into the hands of terrorists” quotes.

Unfortunately the boys from the Terrorist Squad showed up just as we were leaving, furious that we’d seen and photographed the very sensitive plans. They then confiscated my camera, questioned me closely about where I came from and discussed in front of me whether to arrest me or not.

Now if that’s not news, I don’t know what is.
