Fifty Holdthefrontpage readers have told us what they might not tell their colleagues – how much they earn and how long they work.

As well as the facts and figures, our respondents also provided us with a snapshot insight into their working lives.

The figures revealed some trainees on less than £10,000 with qualified specialist reporters rising to almost £25,000.

Some respondents said they had been without a pay rise for two years.

One chief sub editor wrote in to say their 37.5 hour week brought them £26,000 a year in wages, while another – who often worked 50 hours a week- commanded more than £30,000.

Trainees in Dorset and Somerset reported salaries of between £9,500 and £11,000, with senior rates varying between £11,000 and £18,000. Specialists in the same area could expect up to £19,000.
