Trainees and reporters in Scotland and Wales said they earned upwards of £9,000, rising to £14,000 among those who responded to our survey.

Salaries for senior reporters in Surrey, Essex, Kent and the south coast ranged between £15,000 and £17,000, and trainees could expect to pick up at least £11,000, Holdthefrontpage was told.

Trainees in the Midlands and the north of England told us their wages ranged from £10,500 up to £13,000.

Such a small sample cannot expect to paint a full picture, but here’s what they told us:

  • “As an off-diary specialist I am expected to do night jobs on top of usual hours and if a story comes up at the weekend that’s relevant to my position, I am on call. I’m not moaning about this – my position and salary mean I should do those extra hours if needed”
  • “I am contracted to and work no more than 37.5 hours a week”
