We're scared of heights – honest!

Abseiling down a 180ft Chatham tower block with your family and friendswatching your every move is not for the faint-hearted.

But a brave trio from Medway Today decided to take the plunge in aid of Macmillan Cancer Relief.

Managing Editor Ron Green, News Editor Nikki White and reporter Sam Lennon flew the flag for the Kent Messenger Group – with expert tuition from the Royal Marine Commandos.

The panic did not set in until the plucky trioventured to the 12th floor and caught a glimpse of the sheer drop belowthem.

Sam Lennon, told colleagues: “Don’t look down. The trick isto look straight ahead”, as he puffed on his last cigarette.

But it was adifferent story when he reached the top and the reality of what he had lethimself in for hit him.

He said: “I’m so nervous, I’m even shaking. I justwant to get it over with, it’s a long way down.”

As he anxiously waited histurn, Ron Green also confessed to being nervous, but wasdetermined to complete the challenge as he was petrified of heights.

He said:”It was fun until I put all the gear on and had to come up here.

“Now I’vegot sweaty palms and a dry mouth, but my knees aren’t knocking yet.

“It’s apersonal challenge for me as I get nervous just looking over the edge ofcliffs.”

But whatever doubts they may have had, they did themselves proudwhen they each touched down to cheers of support from the crowd.

Nikki White said: “It was horrible, but I’m glad I did it.

“It’s somethingI’ve always wanted to do and I figured if I did it for charity I’d have lesschance of chickening out.”
