The Government is seeking views on the planned purchase of 29 paid-for and 16 free weekly London newspapers by Newsquest from Independent News & Media.
The £60m sale would have to be approved by the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry because Newsquest already has a substantial portfolio – but it may be rubber-stamped because the circulation of the Greater London newspapers to be transferred falls within limits set by the Competition Commission.
Competition factors, concentration of ownership, efficiency and employment, as well as the need for accurate presentation of news and free expression of opinion will be looked into before a decision is made on whether a deal might operate against the public interest.
