Sunday Mercury exposes "brothel"

The manageress of a gentleman’s club has been ordered to pay £4,000 after being exposed in an undercover Sunday Mercury investigation.

She was prosecuted after Mercury reporter Simon Mowbray was offered sex and a massage while posing as a client at the club, which is advertised as a therapy centre.

When the reporter visited the club in June 2000 he was offered a massage for £30, and said there was as many as a dozen women offering sex for money.

After he left the club he reported his findings to the council.

The manageress was fined £2,000 and ordered to pay costs of £2,231 after pleading guilty to running the business without a licence to perform massage.

Mercury reporter Simon, said: “I saw a four-poster bed, leather sofas and giant mirrors.

“How anyone could say the club was offering tonal therapy was beyond me. It was evidently a brothel.

“The girl who gave me a massage told me that she was more than happy to have intercourse or perform oral sex for £40.

“If I wanted, she said she could fetch one of the other girls who specialised as a leather-clad dominatrix. I made my excuses and left.”
