Still enjoying the job, 40 years on

Hugh Worsnip has spent 40 years as a reporter for the Gloucester Citizen.

  • Hugh as he is today
  • He joined the paper as a trainee reporter and since then he has enjoyed what he describes as “the best job in the world” – and has no plans to give up yet.

So far it has been an eventful career, during which time he has been sacked three times, sued, arrested and been mistaken for an armed robber!

He says the biggest news story has ever covered was the Fred and Rosemary West house of horrors, where it was his job to help interpret and explain the story to the rest of the world.

  • Hugh in 1962
  • He said: “The Wests’ story was one of the few occasions when that much overworked adjective ‘sensational’ can be properly applied.”
