Stars join The Star's photo mosaic

A mosaic of 20,000 faces is being created with help from The Star to raise cash for a new cancer centre in Sheffield.

The paper has joined forces with Macmillan Cancer Relief in a campaign called Face Up.

Readers are urged to supply pictures of themselves and make a donation to the fund to build a £1.25m palliative care centre at the Northern General Hospital.

The photos will be made into a mosaic and a computer-enhanced mural created to hang in the city centre.

Celebrities have joined ordinary readers in backing the scheme, which is expected to raise £50,000. Among those who have supplied pictures are top boxing coach Brendan Ingle, former Coronation Street star Chloe Newsome and world-famous cricket umpire Dickie Bird.

The Star carries a Face Up logo with regular progress reports.

Forward planning editor Paul License said: “It was a bit slow to start with but it’s beginning to catch people’s imaginations.

“We’ve had a couple of schools taking part and some school kids will be involved in designing the final picture. It’s nice that it involves all the community at all ages and all levels.”
