Star chooses its top School Reporters

The winners of this year’s Ipswich Evening Star School Reporter scheme have been announced.

In the high school category, 16-year-old Phong Luu was chosen after submitting several articles over the year including a review of a school play, and in the primary category Alice Webb was chosen.

Phong Luu hopes her award-winning spell as a School Reporter is the first step on her way to a career in journalism, and that she may even follow in the footsteps of the Evening Star’s feature writer Debbie Watson, who is a former School Reporter.

She said: “I would like to work on a magazine and my main interest is in fashion. I have always loved English and writing, it is my favourite subject.”

Judges were impressed by the high standard of the work done by the all the youngsters at primary and high schools for the competition, which this year saw over 200 pupils from 60 schools taking part.

Following the success of the School Reporter scheme, special Writing Skill Workshops have recently been held at newspaper’s offices on Saturday mornings.

Editor, Nigel Pickover said: “The skills and techniques we are teaching these young people will stand them in good stead when they are writing news stories for us, and will also be very helpful for general school work.”
