"Richly deserved" award for John Gibson

John Gibson, Executive Sports Editor of the Evening Chronicle, Newcastle, has been named as regional sportswriter of the year at the Sport England and Sports Writers Association annual presentation in London.

It is the latest in a long line of awards for John. In fact, he was the first person to win the award when it was created 18 years ago – in those days, the presentation was backed by the Sports Council.

John scooped the title for a portfolio of Face To Face interviews with former Sunderland skipper Kevin Ball, Darlington chairman George Reynolds and Carlisle chief Michael Knighton.

Sports Editor Paul New commented: “The award is richly deserved. John’s series of Face To Face interviews has been a key part of our sports package for over a year.

“This award recognises John’s ability to get to grips with his subjects in a way that few others can.”

Two years ago, John was named as the North East’s Sports Writer of the Year.
