With long overcoat, uncombed hair and creased shirt, Yorkshire Evening Post reporter Alan Cameron fits the stereotype of the scruffy hack.

So when the newspaper’s features editor Anne Pickles needed to “reinvent” someone from the newsroom for an article, he was the perfect choice.

The pair hit the streets of Leeds in a bid to transform the self-confessed ‘unmade bed’ into a suave and sophisticated man for all seasons.

First stop was a Vidal Sassoon clinic to do something about Alan’s hair, which he himself likened to ‘a bust sofa’.

But he wasn’t prepared for the stylist who took one look at his messy barnet and accidently said ‘oh gosh’ out loud.
