Record editor leaves – Herald claims it played a part

A Glasgow Evening Herald football exclusive played a part in the departure of Daily Record editor Martin Clarke – according to the Herald.

The Record says Mr Clarke resigned to pursue other career opportunities.

But the Herald ran a story claiming that its own exclusive, on Ronald de Boer signing for Glasgow Rangers – which Mr Clarke’s sports desk had failed to pick up, was the final straw for Mr Clarke.

The Daily Record has appointed Peter Cox as its new editor.

Mr Cox, who lives in Stirling with his journalist wife Kay and their four children, takes over at Scotland’s biggest selling newspaper.

He was editor of the Record’s sister paper, the Sunday Mail and also a former deputy editor of the Daily Record.

Mr Cox told his readers: “My aim is to continue to work on the progress which has already been made and reinforce our position as Scotland’s Champion.”

Mark Hollinshead, managing director SDR & SM Ltd, said: “Peter is a first class journalist who has already demonstrated his talent and ability as editor of the Sunday Mail.

“His return to the Daily Record will ensure it maintains its position as Scotland’s premier newspaper.”

He added: “In highly competitive market conditions, Martin Clarke has made a valuable contribution to the success of the Daily Record during his stewardship of the news-paper.

“We wish him well for whichever career route he chooses to take up in the future.”

The new editor of the Sunday Mail will be announced in the next few weeks and until then deputy editor Alan Rennie will be acting editor.
