Readers raise £8,000 to beat rare condition

The Leicester Mercury has helped to raise £8,000 for a toddler with a unique disorder.

Two-year-old Toby Marriott, cannot yet walk or talk, is partially sighted and slightly deaf.

He needs specialist toys and equipment to help his development, but his parents could not turn to charities to help with the cost as Toby doesn’t suffer from a condition that is covered by any of them.

In July, The Mercury told his story and £8,000 has since been raised for a fund set up by Toby’s parents.

The money has paid for specialist toys and a chair for him to use at playgroup.

A newly furbished room, with a cabin bed and reflective material aimed at stimulating the senses is also planned.

Toby’s mum, Julie said: “It is amazing what has been done in a few months. It has stopped me from worrying about where the money is going to come from if we need things for Toby.”
