Readers help battered pensioner

Sickened by a picture of battered pensioner Doris Jackson, readers of the Hull Daily Mail have responded with generous offers of cash help.

Doris (92) was beaten black and blue after she answered the door to a stranger at her city flat.

A picture of her badly bruised face was used on page one.

During her 30-minute ordeal, Mrs Jackson was repeatedly punched before the intruder made off with £100 he found in a drawer which she had been saving for a holiday.

Three anonymous benefactors have each handed over £100 after reading about the pensioner’s plight.

Detectives praised the generous response, and said Mrs Jackson had shown a lot of fighting spirit and had gone on her holiday as planned.
