Qatar case goes online

In-depth details of an evening newspaper’s year-long battle to lift reporting restrictions on a multi-million pound civil court case can now be found in a specially-created section of its website.

The Jersey Evening Post last week persuaded a court to lift reporting restrictions on a case concerning the Middle Eastern state of Qatar, in which its foreign minister is alleged to have paid cash received in commissions for arms contracts into three Jersey-registered trusts.

Now the newspaper has decided to publish an online record of its fight on its website, in a section called: The Qatar Case.

It provides an overview of events leading up to the paper’s appeal and tells how although the paper won its fight to lift reporting restrictions, they are currently still in place pending an appeal by the Foreign Minister and the State of Qatar.

A copy of last week’s 32-page judgement can also be found on the site along with analysis of proceedings, the issue of national security and the principle of publicity in open court.
