Pub could be named afterLes Dawson

The Blackpool Citizen has called time on its competition to name a new bar in St Annes.

Readers were invited by the newspaper to suggest names for the new JD Wetherspoon’s pub and restaurant which opens in February.

The names had to reflect the history of St Annes and the best have been forwarded to JD Wetherspoon, which will make a decision in the next few weeks.

A few of the more interesting suggestions include The Squire Pickles after the last squire of Lytham and St Annes, The Debtor’s Retreat, and The Wig and Stethoscope, because the building has previously housed a firm of solicitors and a doctors surgery.

But Hold the Front Page’s current favourite is Dawson’s Creek, after the late comedian Les Dawson, who grew up in the area.

The Citizen said: “It has been one of our most popular competitions ever.

“We’ve had some unusual, some interesting, some well-researched and, frankly, some downright daft entries.”
