Prince's warm words for regional press

The Prince of Wales was the guest of honour at a lunch for regional newspaper publishers and editors at the Newspaper Society’s offices in Bloomsbury.

The Prince spoke warmly of the important role played by regional newspapers in their communities and said: “It is the local side of life that matters so much.”

He also talked about the Prince’s Trust Local Reporting Award, being run in association with the Newspaper Society.

This award is aimed at encouraging reporting of inspiring community stories. Newspapers who take part will be asked to publish articles on this theme by young people in their area – who could be young reporters, readers or volunteers – during Local Newspaper Week (May 1-7, 2000).

The lunch was hosted by the Society’s president James Evans and attended by 15 publishers and editors. Wide-ranging discussions covered issues close to the Prince’s heart, including architecture, agriculture, education and healthcare.
