Nottingham City Council is cutting through its red tape after the Evening Post highlighted the case of a 90-year-old partially-sighted man who had to journey across the city 12 times to renew his disabled person’s bus pass.
Officials have said the system will be changed so that people with a permanent disability will not need to get annual proof of their condition, and will be able to renew their pass by post.
Adrian Jones, the city’s assistant director (development), said: “The Evening Post did highlight the problems of the complicated scheme that we inherited.
“We now have a database, and a postal system which will improve services to disabled customers.”
Great-grandfather Dr Neville Potter, of Wollaton, who had to make 12 trips to get the correct signatures and stamps on his pass renewal, said the changes were “splendid”.
He added: “It was a major job to get that bus pass, and my bus pass is essential. I’m delighted.”
