Hot-shot photographers in the frame for awards

The nominees for this year’s Picture Editors’ Awards have been announced, with several regional press photographers in the running.

Staff photographers from the York Evening Press, Liverpool Daily Post & Echo, Exeter Express & Echo, Edinburgh Evening News, Yorkshire Evening Post, Croydon Advertiser, Thetford Times, Diss Mercury, Newbury Weekly News, The Scotsman, The Herald and Evening Times in Glasgow have all made the shortlist.

They will compete with freelancers, agency staff and national newspaper photographers to win awards which will be presented during a ceremony at the Guildhall in London on Tuesday, May 18.

Among the 16 single image and portfolio categories, prizes will be handed out for the Regional Photographer of the Year and the Photographer of the Year – Local Newspapers.

In the regional photographer category, Francis Dwyer from the York Evening Press, Colin Lane from the Liverpool Daily Post & Echo, Phil Wilkinson from Scotsman Publications and freelance Wattie Cheung will compete for the title.

In the local newspaper category, colleagues David Berman and Theo Moye from the Croydon Advertiser will compete against each other, along with Phil Cannings from the Newbury Weekly News and Denise Bradley from the Thetford & Watton Times and the Diss Mercury.

Picture editors from across the UK and Ireland will now vote to decide on the winners.

In addition to these awards, entries are still being accepted for the Corporation of London’s Student Awards which are open to students who intend to follow a career in photographic journalism. Entries close at noon on Friday March 12, and more details can be found on the awards’ website.
