OAPs on their guard

Aberdeen pensioners are being urged to be cautious of unknown callers at the door – and their local evening newspaper is helping to drive home the message.

The Evening Express has produced handy size posters for OAPS to have at home – and large versions for community centres – headed “Be On Your Guard”.

The posters remind pensioners to ask three key questions: what is the caller’s name; what do they want; and where is their ID?

Also printed on the posters are contact numbers for the organisations most likely to send people round to the door, such as the local council, the water authority, gas and power companies. There is also a contact number for the local police.

The posters are part of the Evening Express campaign “Keep Our Pensioners Safe”.

Backing for the idea has come from many pensioners’ groups around the city.

Alice Elrick, who runs an exercise class for pensioners at a city leisure centre, said: “We will be putting up the posters and wish the campaign success. We are talking, after all, about a generation for whom it was second nature to take people at face value and to leave the front door unlocked.

“Nowadays it is important for the elderly to be on their guard.”
