  • A website that provides support and advice for bullied children has been commended in the Online Communities section at the New Statesman/BT New Media Awards 2001.
    Bullying Online, which is also a charity, is run by Yorkshire Evening Post sub-editor Liz Carnell, and offers advice for children, parents and teachers on all aspects of bullying.
    The site went live in April 1999 and had more than 44,000 visitors in its first year.

  • Derby Evening Telegraph readers have helped police track down two burglary suspects who were featured in the paper as part of a week-long crime reduction campaign.The pair were arrested following tip-offs from readers – with one suspect claiming he didn’t even know he was wanted for burglary until he read the article.

  • Love has blossomed through the pages of the East Anglian Daily Times after reader Kali Sheridan popped the question of marriage to her boyfriend in the newspaper.
    Jerry Saltwell said “yes” after his girlfriend proposed in the personal announcements section.
    The couple are now hoping to marry in February on Valentines Day in Mexico.

  • The Ipswich Evening Star has thrown down the gaunlet to its readers, asking them to take part in a sponsored walk in aid of autistic brother and sister Kate and Sam Horsfield.
    The paper is seeking at least 100 people to do an 11-mile trek on Saturday, August 25 and raise £5,000 towards the twin’s vital intensive therapy.
    The twins parents face a bill of around £60,000 over the next two years to pay for the tots’ specialist teaching.

  • A grieving aunt who gave up a £1,500 holiday to attend her niece’s funeral has a replacement break, thanks to the Daily Record.
    Margaret Bruce was devastated when her four-year-old niece died suddenly.
    Then travel firm JMC refused to let her swap her flight to Tenerife saying a change at short notice was a security risk.
    After the Record stepped in the flights were rearranged at no extra cost and the firm has apologised.
