Newport 3 Raunds Town 0

Before the game kicked off at St. George’s Park on Saturday, Ashleigh Wright received a presentation for January’s player of the month, followed by February’s which was awarded to Dave Wilson.

Newport made an impressive start to the game, pushing forward, with plenty of shots on goal. It was only six minutes into the game when a corner was taken extremely well. Raunds keeper, Matt Finlay, looked to be on the end of it when he stumbled and was lucky that his defenders were alert.

Excellent play by Newport in the 13th minute which resulted in Danny Gibbons’ shot just skimming the bar. For some reason Newport just couldn’t finish these chances off. Within the first 16 minutes of the game Newport had four corners, whereas at the other end of the pitch, making his home debut, goalkeeper, Chris Tardiff, was a mere spectator!

Raunds Town were showing little strength, while Newport were showing off all the skill they had. Chance after chance came Newport’s way, but they couldn’t get the goal they deserved. A chance came and went in the 38th minute when Steve Leigh shot wide.

It was four minutes before half time when the Isle of Wight side opened the goal scoring. It was Tom Betteridge who crossed the ball, Gary Green who headed it down and Steve Leigh who scored a fantastic goal from just outside the area. Half time and Newport were 1-0 up, but it so easily could have been 4.

Sixty minutes of the match played and, with a little help from captain John Price, Danny Gibbons made the score line 2-0 to the Port. Newport remained the dominant side and were beginning to show it a bit better by seizing the chances that came their way.

A superb goal from close range was scored by Gary Green in the 77th minute after a cross from Danny Gibbons to bring the score up to 3-0.

With news that Fisher were 2-0 down Newport’s hopes were high dreaming of a promotion which is getting closer and closer.

Gary Green had a terrific game and was awarded Man Of The Match.
