New Gazette editor named

Stephen Dyson has been appointed the new editor of the Evening Gazette, Middlesbrough.

He will take over from Paul Robertson, who next week becomes editor of the Evening Chronicle, Newcastle.

Stephen, (34), is currently deputy editor of the Birmingham Evening Mail, where he has worked since 1994, and was heavily involved in the relaunch of the paper earlier this year.

And he will be putting that experience to good use, as part of his brief in his new job will be to turn the Gazette, one of last remaining evening broadsheets, into a tabloid.

Stephen (pictured) said: “I’m really looking forward to my new role on Teesside. I can’t wait to get stuck in.

“The area’s mix of live news, real industry, colourful politics and regional pride make it a tremendous place for a newspaper, and I feel privileged to have been asked to play a part.

“The Gazette is already a strong, stable title with an established affinity in the area.

“I want to continue with the excellent work to help develop an even greater product.

“Having been in Birmingham for so long I will miss it, but it is the right time to go.”

Born just a stone’s throw from Longbridge, Stephen began his journalism career at Caters News Agency in Birmingham in 1991, before moving to Birmingham Metro News in 1992 and then to the Sunday Mercury in 1993.

He joined the Birmingham Evening Mail as industrial correspondent and has since held several posts including features editor, assistant editor and head of news, before becoming deputy editor last year.

He takes up his new position on June 24.
