Moves for recognition

Talks are under way at newspapers around the country to thrash out agreements on recognition of the National Union of Journalists.

Meetings between union representatives and management were taking place this week at the Yorkshire Evening Post and Sheffield Star – both part of Regional Independent Media – after statutory recognition claims were submitted.

Other evening and weekly titles are also willing to find out more and build a full working relationship, says the union.

Meetings are planned at the Croydon Advertiser, South London Press (Trinity Mirror), Lancashire Evening Post, Newcastle Chronicle and Journal and the News Shopper series in Petts Wood, Kent (part of Newsquest).

Jeremy Dear, at the NUJ, said: “Four companies have refused our initial approaches for recognition. They are the Bristol Evening Post, Gloucester Citizen, The Sentinel, Stoke, and the Western Mail and Echo, part ofTrinity Mirror.

“For those who have refused to talk we will consider submitting statutoryapplications to the Central Arbitration Committee over the next coupleof weeks.”
